Makka na Chikai
Busou Renkin OP Review
By MistaYoH

Hi guys! This is MistaYoH, friend of Crest, Xak and bj0rn. Lately i’ve been watching the anime Busou Renkin
and found myself singing the OP of the song to myself. And here’s a review of this catchy song Makka na Chikai

——————————
Opening sequence to anime logo
——————————

The song begins with tones of energy charged by the heavy bass where the hot-blooded voice (a combination that’ll never go wrong) of Yoshiki Fukuyama bursting in the background. Coincidentally, Yoshiki Fukuyama is a member of JAM Project known for its stylistic and “hot blooded” emoting. The sequence of which the emblem flowed into the Kakugane, the main theme of “Shape” used by the weapons of the anime is an excellent effect.

The presentation of the credits in the anime is done in an interesting and refreshing manner. Unlike other anime, the credits
of the show is presented in point form, “bulluted” by the Kakugane. It ties well with the Kakagune, one of the key symbols of Busou Renkin and shows how much thought is put into this OP sequence. The logo in the anime is almost identical as the manga version where the Kanji of Busou Renkin is used as the title. Placed in the background is yet another Kakugane emblem, with ‘Busou Renkin’ written in Hiragana at the bottom. An inventive take for what otherwise is a typical shounen anime where the form of the logo is fashioned out of metal.

——————————
Verse sequence to chorus
——————————

The 1st verse begins with Fukuyama’s voice roaring on the musical stage, supported ably by light electric bass. The animation featuring the main character Mutou running towards the camera from a distance, where a second of frames of Tokiko, the female lead flashes by. The next scene is a close up of Mutou running towards the camera where it is slowly panning upwards to Mutou’s friends and his sister. This scene is probably attempting to show the reasons or people Mutou is fighting for. Up till now, the OP sequences engage the viewer with constant action and the scene changes occur after 30 seconds, thus the credits can be read clearly with the decent time allocation. The next scene is the “conjuring-up” of Mutou’s weapon, Sunlight Heart, basked in the golden sunlight it’s named after. The next few sequences of scenes are simply introducing the characters Mutou will meet and fight in the story. Captain Bravo, Hayasaka Oka and her brother Shuusui Hayasaka making their appearance, followed by Papillion Mask Chouno Koushaku and Shosei Sakaguchi and the rest of Team Victor Expedition. Finally, Victor himself makes an appearance with his black Kakugane in this OP sequence although strangely Doctor Butterfly isn’t in this OP sequence.

The sequence following the introduction of villians is where Mutou is seen training by himself, tripping over and such. Typical of all shounen series, there’s a point in the show where you’ll need to beef yourself up to defeat stronger enemies and Busou Renkin is no exception. A hint of power is also shown through the emblem of Mutou’s Black Kakugane is hidden in his body (it’s in the eyes lol). The climax which is the chorus is accompanied by this sequence where Tokiko is seen sitting in the sunset on a water-tank, her favourite spot in Mutou’s school. Pictures of her comrades (and lovers) like Gouta and Mutou flash in the background as she grasps her chest, probably worrying for them and suffering from heartache (TOKIKO FTW!). Moonface makes an appearance with all his different forms, then Captain Bravo posing by the sea and finally Papillion Mask Chouno again with his Busou Renkin, flying in the air, like a real butterfly, except he looks really silly instead of graceful. And finally we see Tokiko and her wonderful Valkyrie Skirt Busou Renkin in all it’s grace. Mutou conjures up his own Sunlight Heart Busou Renkin and charges towards the screen with an aura of valour. Mutou’s school lies in shambles and his friends all cheering for him as the two fight on. This is a scene that will occur much later in the anime by the way. Great animation as like before and good pacing with the scenes.

—————————
Chorus
—————————

“Cool manga-style shading” was the first thing that was in my mind. As Mutou charges in the screen, the shading changes from Manga-style to anime style. Tokiko’s next as she charges in with the same style. Finally, the combined Busou Renkin of Mutou and Takiko as they brace for an attack. Very very cool in my opinion with a suiting chorus. Very hotblooded and action packed.
